Garbage speaks for itself

garbage

One of the common sights in the City is uncollected garbage. The picture above speaks for itself. The garbage was dumped at the back of the public market. It was Saturday- a market day.

If simple garbage collection cannot be done, how much more for a bigger task? Come’on, let’s stop talking about development. How about focusing on simple things like garbage?

Garbage collection is one of the functions of the city government, per Republic Act 9003 or the ecological solid waste management act and provisions in the Local Government Code. Yet, as you and I have observed, there is really a lack of effort on the part of the local government to solve the garbage problem. Shouldn’t it be placed as one of their top priorities since garbage affects almost everyone and every aspect of our lives, such as our health, water, air, land, etc.? Although we have the national government agencies like the DENR-EMB who has the mandate to implement the RA 9003, but the agency just provides technical assistance to the LGU. it is the LGU who has the main responsibility and who should initiate waste management within its area of jurisdiction.
